Tim Tebow & Circumcision: a Public Service Circumciser

I feel sorry for Tim Tebow, the awesome quarterback for the University of Florida 'Gators, not because he has a terrific future in front of him. But because people cannot seem to blog about him without tossing in his missionary trip to the Phillipines during the 2008 spring break.

During that trip, Tim took part in circumcising Filipino boys who almost all get circumcised in that country. Circumcision is a rite of passage in a country that is about 95% foreskin-free. To be uncircumcised is to be "supot" or "pisot." Both words carry a negative connotation far beyond the simple expression "uncircumcised," the literal translation. If you call another dude supot, it's like saying he's unclean, a baby, and unworthy to be a man.

While some college kids go on drunken debaucheries during spring break, Tim was helping out his father on a mission trip. Here was the account at the time:

"In an impoverished village outside General Santos City in the Philippines, Tebow helped circumcise impoverished children. On the Friday of a weeklong trip to the orphanage his father's ministry runs in Southeast Asia, Tebow assisted with the care of locals who had walked miles to the temporary clinic that the ministry helped organize. More than 250 people underwent medical and dental procedures, some of them from "Dr. Tebow," who has no formal surgical training."

"The first time, it was nerve-racking," he said. "Hands were shaking a little bit. I mean, I'm cutting somebody. You can't do those kinds of things in the United States. But those people really needed the surgeries. We needed to help them."

"Tebow didn't plan on operating that day in the Philippines -- his job was to preach to the hundreds of people before they had teeth pulled or cysts removed. But as the day rolled on, he grew curious about the three Filipino doctors and his friend, UF graduate and aspiring doctor Richard "R.B." Moleno, in the bus-sized vehicle that served as a mobile hospital.

"Tebow started as a helper and gofer, holding tools and running errands for the medics. By afternoon, he was asking questions and looking for more active ways to help. And by the end of an exhausting day, he was wearing gloves and a mask, wielding surgical scissors, finishing off stitches with a snip."

In my view, Tim Tebow's public service circumcision of Filipino boys is something to praise, not ridicule. But, of course, the media is the media. And Tebow is a lightening rod. I just hope as he enters the NFL, he'll remember how important it is to promote a clean-cut, foreskin-free country both here at home and in Asia, too.

  1. Wow. Praise for a person who is not a surgeon, doing operations in a foreign country for which he has no training, and getting praise in this column for it.
How many ethics violations can you count?
    Performing surgery without a license?
Removing healthy body parts from people below the age of consent?
    Encouragement of such practices?
Public service? You have got to be kidding me.
What happens if he screwed one of those kids up for life, physically? Psychologically?
Sure. It's real important to promote a surgery the AMA calls unnecessary.
You might want to look in the mirror, pal, and see how much you can rationalize away, and still call yourself an ethical human being.

  2. What a SICK Bastard!!!
They should cut his balls off for mutilating underage boys!

  3. Of course, there will always be people who will find fault even with the noblest of men. The kind of people who refuses to acknowledge the good, instead tries to paint it bad.

They think this world would be a better place to live in if everyone else are just like them, fault finders.

  4. It was such a public service, removing half the skin off of their penises like that.
I wonder if he circumcised any girls.
I do public service as well, but it rarely involves untrained surgery on kids.
Yeah, us sneering fault finders will take a swing, whenever it involves amputating healthy parts from an unconsenting child. Some people are just crazy like that.
Like Hippocrates, when he said, "first, do no harm".
What a sick bastard Hippocrates was, when he should have known that Tebow would be doing the Lord's work.
    Allah, I mean.

  6. Circumcision is unnecessary in an age where we have bars of soap and running water. All it does is ruin our penises unnecessarily and thereby ruin our sexual pleasure.

    AND THIS IS THE PROBLEM:
Pro-circumcision people simply don't have the education behind it. If they did, they would see it's simply not a logical procedure except for a few rare cases. I understand his intentions were good in his mind, but that is because a)his mind isn't full of the facts concerning circumcision in order to make the ethically, medically, and functionally logical choice here and b)Tebow lives in a country where a great majority of the men are snipped. OF COURSE HE THINKS HE'S DOING THE RIGHT THING. AND SINCE OTHER PEOPLE ARE ALSO GUILTY OF BOTH A AND B, THEY'LL SUPPORT HIS ACTIONS.

So, the problem here lies with mis-information or complete lack of information. Read my article here:

  10. Now that Tim Tebow has been drafted by Denver, Southpark will have a field day with this. He'll be invited to Southpark Elementary and Chef will serve calamari tips in tomato sauce for him.

    1. Jesus was a Jew and never was asked if he wanted it. His human rights were grossly violated. He as God created himself perfect with a foreskin. So cutting it off was just blasphemy on the part of the cutters.

  14. Did many miss the point that being uncircumcised in this country leads to discrimination and ridicule? And Tim was under the supervision of doctors as well as in hygenic surroundings. The man is a hero, so get over it!

  15. Male circumcision is not the same as female genital mutilation. In males, a piece of skin is removed not the whole penis. Educate yourselves.

  16. Not the same a female genital mutilation? Umm, when a girl/woman has the hood of her clitoris removed it is *only a piece of skin, NOT the entire clitoris*, when a woman has her outer labia removed *it is just the outer lips, NOT the inner labia!*

How can anyone say that female & male circumcision is not the same. YOU ARE REMOVING A VITAL PART OF A PERSONS GENITALIA THAT IS MEANT TO BE THERE!!! FOR A REASON!

  17. "In my view, Tim Tebow's public service circumcision of Filipino boys is something to praise, not ridicule."

How can the genital mutilation of children EVER be something to 'praise'???

Really shows how deeply embedded this culture of cutting has become in the minds of some human beings that they would think it's okay to force something like this upon a child.

    Disgusting.

  18. Why all the pissing and moaning over male circumcision. It isn't anymore brutal than having fat sucked out of your ass, so you can squeeze into a size six again. Get real.

  19. Wow, this "ANONYMOUS" is a real idiot and all the other posters that like to talk about something they clearly do not have accurate information about. It would be laughable, if it wasn't so tragic. Denial is a powerful thing and some men are in real denial and feel the need to support the barbaric cutting on the genitals of children. How is it that some of you don't understand an ADULT making an informed decision to modify their body, is NOT the same as just cutting on a baby or other non consenting minor?? It's not that complicated to understand that cosmetic surgery should not be performed on infants and children without a valid medical reason. The AAP does NOT recommend routine infant circumcision....so that really should tell you something! Of course, there are those who just won't listen.

  20. I wish anticircs would keep their mouths shut. Ninety five of all males in the USA are circumcised. The anticircs pray to the foreskin. They are nuts.

  22. TIm Tebow's "circumcizing" is deeply disturbing on so many levels. He is perpetrating injustice in the name of missions. He is performing surgery for which he is not trained.
Most importantly, as a professing evangelical he is in opposition to the teachings of the New Testament of the Biblem which clearly condemns circumcision for Gentiles.
    http://www.udonet.com/circumcision/christian.html

As a Christian man who was circumcised as an intact, and as a father refused for my sons to be circumcised, as a matter of religious belief, I say , Shame on you, Tim Tebow. Spend less time praying in public and more time reading the Bible in private.

  23. Female genital cutting is not as severe in 90% of cases, the hood of the clitoris is removed. If you measure the amount of skin, male genital mutilation cuts off a lot more, at least half of the skin on the penis. As of 2009, 69.5% of boys in the U.S. remain intact, the majority of the country is intact. Genital cutting is sexual abuse and Tim Tebow is a child molester- he admitted himself that he could not get away with doing what he did if he had done it in the U.S.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, he should be arrested for this. You would be arrested for something much less risky, like giving someone a vaccine, it's crazy that he should get away with an operation like this! Not to mention that circumcision is no longer recommended by ANY major health organization in the world, it increases some risks and decreases the others so the benefits are a mixed bag, on the other hand the sexual drawbacks are going to be there no matter what.

"The foreskin contains more nerve endings than any other part of the penis, that's just fact. In the largest study on circumcision in South Korea, Seoul University found 33% of men who were circumcised reported difficulty attaining sexual gratification, 63% said masturbation less enjoyable, and 11% had "frequent" orgasm difficulties.
(Kim, Peng et all, Seoul University)"

  25. Shows how much the world respects the male... THIS IS SICK and TWISTED...and TIM TEBOW and the Jew-christian ASSWHIPES who perform this madness should all drop dead! What a load of crap... I feel sorry for those poor idiots who do and believe in this act of ritualistic soul killing. We are killing our males and do not realize it.

  26. If Tim is not circumcised, he should be. Christians all over are circumcised whether we are gentiles (in Paul's day) or Jews or Moslems. When in this time, we talk about medical circumcision which has nothing to do with circumcision in the first century when Jesus lived.

  28. Apparently, some of you did not read the article: it is an expectation to be circumcised in the Philippines: 95% of the men have it done, a higher percentage of literacy than this blog. Those who don't have it done live under a stigma. Weird to us, but very real to them. Go back and read and educate yourselves. Secondly, circumcision is controversial, but there is good scientific support for both sides, so stop the name calling and hating. Here's the interesting part of the haters: no one has challenged the facts. Just ignorant opinion and name-calling. My advice to the naysayers and haters: educate yourselves, grow up and get over it. What I really see behind the cruel comments is jealousy and anti-Christian sentiment.

    1. There is no scientific support whatsoever for routine infant circumcision. That's why no medical association in the world recommends it. You want to do it to yourself as an adult? Have at it. Cut your entire penis off if so desired. Pursuit of happiness, don't ya know?

  29. Face it, some cultures do descriminate against the intact male. Those youngsters want to belong to their culture. It is a simple procedure and I am sure Tebow was supervised. In the US it is often done by lay persons in religious ceramony. All this critizism in based on ignorance and jealousy. Get off his back and leave this Christian alone.
